Silky Terrier The Terrier Dog Overview

In late 1800s, the Yorkshire Terrier were cross fertilized with Australian Terrier to develop Silky Terrier. For quite a long time, the two breeds, Australian Terrier and Silky Terrier were considered as the single breed. The breeders were trying to improve the color of coat, in a result Silky Terriers were founded. American armed force personnel brought some Silky Terriers to USA during World War II. Breeders started an extensive breeding program to protect many extinct breeds, among which, the Silky Terrier was also included. The breed became popular amongst the couples without children to satisfy their love concerns toward children. This breed was registered and recognized by AKC in 1959, further standard was established in 1962 which was again amended in 1967 to current enforced AKC standard. The Silky Terrier is serving as an all time companion and vermin repellant. They also accompanied young ladies in their laps and on their beds to avoid loneliness.

Exact replacement of any human infant, the Silk Terrier is a tiny breed and said to be the smallest variant of terrier group. They are build with high energy, strong willpower and confidence, boney structure is refined and have enough power to get rid of its quarries i.e. vermin and rodents. The way of walk is effortless, free and comfortable with good glance angles and approaches. Its single coat is straight and silky with shiny sparks giving more prominence to physical outline of the dog.

The miniature Silky Terrier The Terrier Dog  is the smallest variant of the active terrier group. They are fearless and daring to face larger dogs and animals with equal courage and determination. They are bold and intelligent to act independent; they are curious to strangers and loving to family members. They remain well devoted and loyal to their owner. They are eager to entertain, want to be focus of attentions and willing to be involved in all family matters. They are much attached to any one affectionate member of the family.

The breed is tough to housetrain, not because of its aggressiveness, but due to its miniature size and some stubborn nature. They are quite well with children but will not like the child who behave with them teasingly. As their size suggests, the fragile dog needs a lot of care in handling to avoid unintentional injuries. They are attracted to the people who care for them and get bonded. They would alarm you if any unfamiliar is approaching and will bark extensively. The difficulty of training is to bring moderateness and harmony in the temperament. This needs a consistent and steady training. Socialization training should begin in early puppyhood of the dog.

During housetrain, you need to introduce all pet animals to Silky Terrier for better household environment. Mice and hamsters would be in extreme danger if not timely introduced to your Silky Terrier. Keep the dog with you, in your room, on your bed and introduction with animals should be slow and gradual preferably in your presence. Training schedule should be staggered to avoid routinely repetitions.

1. Silky Terriers are small but have healthy amount of energy, they require regular exercise. Two or three rounds of yard would be enough.
2. They can suit to apartment life very well.
3. Silky Terriers will chase small animals to satisfy its prey desire.
4. They are happy in the lap of the owner, leaving alone will cause destructive dog in result.
5. For grooming, Silky Terrier’s coat should be washed thrice a week.
6. They tend to dig, provide some place to dig, otherwise they will spoil your gardens.
7. Housetrain from puppyhood to adopt good norms of house life. Introduce gradually with other pets, bring moderateness in barking.
8. Socialize the Silky Terrier slow and steadily, teach them to live with other dogs without aggressiveness.
9. Silky Terriers are miniatures and considered to be light boned, handle as per fragile dog breeds. Teach your children to handle the dog with care.
10. Seek for reputed and trustworthy breeders and suppliers to get healthy puppies. Ensure puppies are clinically checked and are disease free.
