The Papillon dog is very small dog of toy breed, playful, lively and amusing. It is well behaved and responsive with high degree of obedience, besides dog is vigorous, soft hearted, and loving companion. The breed is very gentle to children but violent to other pets until well socialized. Curious and inquiring to strangers it tends friendly when introduced. The puppy may be ignorant, timid or shy. Somewhat challenge during handling and housetrain, the dog is adaptive to good temperaments.

The Papillon dog  is a compact gift for active families. The dog is delicately beautiful, smart and dignified with fine-boned structure, projecting rectangle, the dog is a little longer in length than in height. Its graceful gait is effortless, easy and quick. Its long and dense coat is silky and straight sometimes a little wavy. Apart from its cheerfulness and attractiveness, the most distinguished feature of this breed its butterfly ears. The overall expression is alert and dashing dog.

The toy dog, ‘Papillon’ remained a lap dog for several centuries and served the European upper-class and royal families. The dog is sometimes called ‘dwarf spaniels’ during those days. With the passage of time, the ear developed erected resembling butterfly. At the maturity of butterfly-eared breed, the hanging-eared dog is named as “Phalene”. The most distinct and attractive element of the physical appearance for Papillon breed is its beautiful butterfly ears. The word “Papillon” is of French origin meaning ‘Butterfly’. The breed was recognized by AKC in 1915 for the first time. The Papillon is being adapted by young couples who do not have children to satisfy their desires temporarily. The dog is being used as watchdog, entertainer, competitive obedience, agility and trick performer.

Temperament

The dog is said to be a little sports dog and ranks at the top in competitive obedience competitions, much amusing and entertaining while performing in dog shows, their courage and confidence is as high as it could not be expected from a little sized dog. The breed is extremely vigorous, smart, playful, intelligent and compact. Even the size is small, but build is hard-like and sturdy with durable and long life line. They remain devoted and loyal to owner, ever ready to accompany the family with zeal and zest. They could be stated the lively and classical lap dog, a toy to entertain and a butterfly to be chased by interesting children. The dog feels satisfaction and comfort while laying on owner’s foot, in lap and accompany on bed as well. The hunting nature of this small dog sometimes tempt it to conduct the hunting event, they love to hunt small and very small animals and vermin like moths, butterflies and mice comfortable for their size to satisfy their hunting desires. Important to note that these hunting activities are conducted playfully and the dog may flush out blood from vermin but the dog is not suitable for real time hunting in fields. Its boney structure is weak and the heart size is little, during chasing runs, heartbeat may increase to a dangerous level, both element could result in any unpleasant occasion. The dog is courageous, but the factor should be kept in mind that it cannot run as compared to the animals like mice, 

some hovering bird may indicate the presence of mice in surrounding, but the mice would scuttle across the field before the brave little Papillion could find it.

The breed is volunteer in training during socialization. The Papillons are proved a slight biter when handled roughly. The professional breeders could train them to promote calm, trustfulness and courageous aspects of the personality. The breed would be much interrogative and investigative around the surrounding and to strangers as well to work as good watchdogs if intelligently planned training is undergone. They invite other pet animals to play with and enjoy.

Owner Should Know

  1. The Papillons could be timed or shy, treat the attitude in its early training days by introducing new peoples and enhance understanding amongst them.
  2. They are family bonded and need to remain touched. The separation anxiety may affect the dog when left alone for longer periods.
  3. Small size of the dog determines that, it is fragile in nature, hard handling could damage bones of the dog and could result some sort of disability.
  4. The breed is sensitive to anesthesia. Always consult veterinary expert before conducting any medical treatment.
  5. They are playful with children but are seldom biters when annoyed. This factor is to be kept in mind when plying the dog with young kids.
  6. Seek for reputed breeders or trustworthy suppliers to get healthy puppies, never buy puppies from fake pet stores or irresponsible suppliers.
  7. Ensure puppies are medically checked and are disease free.
