Brittany is primarily a gun dog to accompany hunters for bird hunt. Rarely referred as Spaniel but are pointers or Setter in their true working tendencies. When not with hunter even, they look for birds to have some fun, play and hunt. Independent when not controlled, yet responsible and well reactive on master’s directions while at mission. Their trait is meant for curious, suspect, search, explore, investigate and inquiring, all such instinct is augmented by their strong sense of smelling the scents. They adopt destructiveness when left alone or idle at home.

Medium dog breed Brittany is square-proportioned, quite an athlete dog, without tail when born or docked to 3 centimeters, holds high energies, stamina, power and agility to suite its application. A solid, substantial yet not heavy physique encourages speedy run. Their extremely intelligent expressions are highlighted by floppy ears and long legs. Quite easygoing and free gait is long stepping. Far less profuse than spaniels, its coat is either wavy slight curvy or flat and available in tri-colors or combinations. An alert but soft expressions contributed by heavy eyebrows and long legs are charming distinction.

The breed is named after a province of France namely Brittany. In the ear of 1800s, Ancient French Dogs were crossed with Orange and White Setters to develop this breed. A misperception of Welsh Springer Spaniel is a case of interest which does not hold any relations true. This is among the top gundog breeds of old times still possesses all bird dog abilities. The dog was registered in France very first time during year 1907, and was introduced to USA during 1925, firstly recognized by American Kennel Club during year 1934 under the category of sporting dog. Hunters were expecting a gundog with long tail to wag during hunt until they met the result from Brittany to detect, track, point and retrieve prey with greater accuracy and ease.

Eager to be engaged in family, the Brittany dogs are perfect house pets. Besides their touchy and affectionate temperament at home, they are loyal and trustworthy at fields as well. Gentle to children, exceptional with kids, these dogs get along very well with strange dogs and other animals. Puppies may tend to aloof, shy or timid towards strangers, however extends friendship to them with gradual increase in maturity, thus are not suited for watchdog application.

The Brittany dogs welcome interactive training with new challenges. It is an obedient but independent breed. They tend to become hyperactive when not satisfied with exercise activities and would get in destructive posture. Handler should be dominating, fully exercising command and control over dog during daily exercises and other routines.

The Brittany dogs are possessive of their place in pack of house pets. Strong prey drive may tempt them to run or wander suspiciously,
